Frequently Asked Questions
No matter if you’re a self-storage pro or trying it out for the first time, you’re bound to have some questions before renting a storage unit. We want to make sure you have all the information you need in order to choose the right storage space for you. Here are some of the most-common questions we get asked by renters, with answers provided by our service attendants and experts.
What kind of documentation do I need to provide to rent a storage unit?
When you are ready to rent your storage unit, all we ask is that you provide a valid major credit card, with a government-issued picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport). If you decide to use your own homeowners or renter’s insurance, we will need a copy of the insurance declaration page as well.
Do you require/offer insurance?
We require that you protect your valuable property with an insurance policy, and highly recommend Xercor Insurance to all our renters. While you may opt to use your current homeowners or renter’s insurance, many of these policies provide limited coverage for property stored in self-storage. Check with your insurance agent to see if it would be in your best interest to utilize your policy.
Do you provide locks for renters?
You must provide your own locks. However, we do sell locks in our office should you need one. You may lock up your designated storage space only after the lease has been signed.
Do I need to give you a copy of my key?
We do not require a copy of your key unless you choose to have items delivered to the inside of your storage space. If you decide to sign up for our Package Placement delivery service, you will need to complete and sign both our Key Custody Agreement and Property Delivery Agreement forms. Or, if you choose to keep a spare key on file in case of emergencies, only the Key Custody Agreement form will need to be completed and signed. It is then your responsibility to provide us with a key or combination to the lock on your storage unit.
*Terms and conditions apply, and requirements may differ by location.
Do you sell moving supplies?
We are happy to make your storage experience as convenient as possible by offering a one-stop shop for all your storing and moving needs. We sell a wide range of boxes (including specialty boxes), bubble wrap and fillers, packaging tape, protective covers and more.
Do you have trucks/vans available to rent for moving?
For your convenience, we offer a Free Move-In Truck/Van so you can unload your items into your storage unit and drop off the truck/van all at one location. The first 20 miles are on us! All we need is:
- A valid driver’s license (must be 21 or older)
- Proof of liability insurance
- Truck/van insurance and a refundable deposit is required
*Not available at Power Self Storage Kuakini, Marinship Self Storage, and Budget Mini Storage. Peninsula Storage Center offers $30 off a truck rental.
Do you have handcarts or dollies I could use?
Take the load off your back! Our friendly, outside attendants are always available to bring you dollies and moving carts to help you with your items, getting you in and out quickly.
Is your staff available to help me move into my unit?
Outstanding customer service and unique offerings are key to the success of our company. We have associates on-site who are happy to help you with your move. Just let us know in advance and we will be ready for you! Please note that Carry-In service is for new move-in tenants only, and available only during office hours. Special terms and weight restrictions apply.
How should I store items that are sensitive to cold, heat, moisture or dust?
If you are storing sensitive items such as paper documents, electronics, clothing or family heirlooms, you should always consider temperature-controlled units that maintain humidity and prevent moisture or dust from entering. Any boxes should be tightly sealed with packing tape to prevent any dirt or debris from getting inside.
Do you have any tips for packing and storing my items?
We would like to help make your move less stressful. Organizing and preparing weeks ahead of your move will reduce your stress, and it will decrease your chances of overlooking important items. Here is an easy-to-follow Moving Guide to help you.
What if I need seasonal access to my storage contents?
We are here for you and open all year, but to allow our employees to spend time with their families, we are closed on the following holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. There will be limited access on the following holidays: the Fourth of July, and the days before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. For specific office and gate closures, you should contact your storage facility.
What if I need extended access?
Extended access is available to business customers only. Customers who want extended access or 24-hour access must complete a Special Access Hours Application (Form 3-H) and pay for a background check to be completed. Please note that we will need to have a full background check on every person who is accessing the facility after gate hours.
*Not offered at all locations.
Can you accept packages delivered to your facility on my behalf?
We will gladly accept packages* on your behalf and place them in your unit for storage or pick-up. You will need to fill out a simple agreement granting us access to your unit, along with a copy of your key. Be sure to stop by the front desk to enroll in our Package Placement Delivery Service.
*Additional charges may apply. Please consider weight and time restrictions. This service is not available at all locations. For more details, ask an associate.
Do you host auctions at the facility?
On occasion, we hold storage auctions as a last resort in order to reclaim abandoned units, clean the space for new tenants and attempt to recoup lost fees. Check with a storage facility near you to find out when they will be held.

Do you rent space month-to-month or do I have to sign a long-term lease?
To make sure we constantly meet all of our customers’ unique storage needs, all of our units are available for month-to-month leases. This way, you can rent a storage space for exactly as long as you need it without being tied down by a long-term contract.
How do I make rental payments?
For your convenience, we accept automatic bill payments so you’ll never miss a payment again. We also accept credit cards, cash, personal and company checks, traveler’s checks, money orders, and cashier’s checks – provided you are not in a Pre-lien or Lien Status. By request, our office can provide you with a receipt for cash payments. Checks must be made payable to our company for the amount owed. No cash back. Payroll and two-party checks are not accepted.
Do you offer referral bonuses?
We do! Receive $50.00 rent credit when you refer a friend or family member who needs self-storage! For every referral, you earn $50 credit towards your rent. You’ll receive this bonus every time a new referral rents a unit. Fill out our referral form to get started. The number of times you can earn this credit is unlimited, so the more people you tell, the more you can save!
How do I move out?
If you decide you no longer need your storage space, all customers are required to give a Ten-Day Vacate Notice per your lease agreement. The written Vacate Notice must be signed by the customer on the lease. A written Vacate Notice which is hand-delivered or postmarked ten (10) days before the last day (paid-thru date) of the monthly term and received in our office is considered timely notice of termination.
What are the rules and regulations while storing at the facility?
We’re committed to creating a positive experience for our customers. For your safety and the safety of others, you can view a full document of our Rules and Regulations.
